Peirce College Partners with Year Up to Reduce Unemployment in Philadelphia

Innovative partnership will prepare young adults for today’s job market through educational and professional experiences

PHILADELPHIA–()–Peirce College, Philadelphia’s leading private, non-profit, four-year accredited institution for working adult learners, has announced a new partnership with Year Up’s Professional Training Corps (PTC) program, to help young adults in Philadelphia earn a college degree and embark on a fulfilling career.

This innovative partnership comes at a critical time, as young people are striving to gain the education and skill sets necessary for employment. An estimated 45,000 people ages 18 to 24 in Philadelphia are currently jobless, not attending school, and do not have a degree beyond a high school diploma. But by 2020, 63 percent of jobs in Pennsylvania will require some type of postsecondary education.

This fall, Year Up and Peirce are offering a unique solution for the city’s young adults, helping them gain the hands-on experience and technical skills employers are seeking. Students will complete up to 27 credits at the College; participate in a full-time internship at a Fortune 1000 company in Philadelphia; and benefit from a range of support services, including professional development, networking opportunities, and life coaching. Upon completion of the yearlong program, students are equipped to continue their postsecondary degree, and will have the skills, experience, and contacts to thrive in a corporate environment.

“Peirce College and Year Up share the same philosophy: to provide a supportive, career- focused environment that can help students reach their personal and professional potential,” said Uva Coles, Vice President of Student Services at Peirce College. “Combining Peirce’s career-related courses with a comprehensive, full-time Year Up internship provides students the opportunity to develop professional skills and accelerate their careers, while building relationships with highly respected companies in the region.”

Year Up has established permanent offices on the Peirce College campus, and its staff members will have a constant, one-on-one presence in the development of this class of professionals.

“Year Up’s PTC programs in Baltimore and Miami have seen an 85 percent success rate for alumni in continuing their education and/or gaining full-time employment within four months of graduation,” said Lisette Nieves, National Director of Strategic Program Pilots for Year Up. “We see that same potential in Philadelphia and specifically with Peirce College because of our corresponding values and organizational goals. We are very excited to join forces to serve career-driven learners here in Philadelphia.”

“We are delighted to be chosen by Year Up to bring the Professional Training Corps to the Philadelphia area,” said Coles. “We look forward to providing this exciting opportunity to the students we serve.”
