Google does indeed reveal tablet; Nexus 7 to ship in 2-3 weeks

Google is the latest to throw its tablet into the ring, hot on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement of its own branded tablet  last week, and with the new Kindle Fire expected to ship in July.  The Nexus 7 was announced earlier today at the I/O Developers Conference in San Francisco.

As rumored and as we reported earlier today, the Nexus is aimed directly at the Kindle Fire and is not expected to be a threat to the iPad.  The tablet has a 7 inch display, is 2 ounces lighter than the Kindle Fire (which is more like 300lbs when you’re talking tablets), and features a much richer HD screen and a faster graphics chipset.

Amazon, however, is expected to fire (get it?) right back with its latest version of the Kindle Fire, rumored to be slated for release in late July.

The Nexus 7 will run on the latest version of Android, dubbed Jelly Bean, and will start at $199 8GB, with the 16GB carrying a $249 price tag.

Check it out at the Google Play store.
