Evan succeeds Craig Powell, who founded ConnectEDU in 2002 and served as the company’s CEO since 2009. Craig’s vision and the company’s growth under his leadership have established ConnectEDU as a market leader in managing student transitions.

“My past 10 years with ConnectEDU have been a phenomenal journey. I’m very excited to be transitioning the day-to-day leadership of ConnectEDU to Evan and the management team that I have had the pleasure of working with for the past several years. Evan is a knowledgeable, education technology executive and is perfectly suited to lead ConnectEDU through its next phase of growth,” stated Powell.

In that role, Evan focused on providing clients with the services needed to best support their institutional goals. “Adding Evan to ConnectEDU’s management team was one of the key benefits of our Epsilen acquisition,” said Tom Riley, Chairman of the ConnectEDU Board. “He is a seasoned executive with deep experience in the education space.”

While at Epsilen, Evan was the Chief Executive Officer and was instrumental in finalizing the strategic acquisition between ConnectEDU and Epsilen. Prior to Epsilen, Evan served as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Portfolio Management at SunGard Higher Education. From 1999 to 2005, Evan was director of e-learning solutions at WebCT, an online proprietary virtual learning environment system known today as the Blackboard Learning System. Prior to that, he was an instructional technology coordinator at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), overseeing implementation of academic and related technologies for the university, and a lecturer in the English department at Loyola Marymount University.

“I’m excited to continue partnering with and leading the team to service our customers in the critical areas of college and career readiness. Being able to advance our shared mission of driving student persistence and success is critical to local, national and global educational imperatives,” explains Nisonson. “We have a unique offering to help learners succeed from K12 all the way through to their careers, and we have only scratched the surface of what is possible. I couldn’t be more excited about our future.”

According to the TechCrunch article, Edxus plans to consolidate the fragmented European e-learning market, rivaling similar U.S. edtech giants such as Pearson, Blackboard, Macmillan, Kaplan and McGraw-Hill, which top the list of acquisitive e-learning companies.

From Edxus’ site, Charles McIntyre, the chief executive of IBIS Capital, added: “The European e-Learning industry currently displays both disruptive innovation and rapid growth but it is highly fragmented and lacks a dominant player. These are all characteristics of an attractive pre-consolidation phase industry so we expect our strategy to help the marketplace as a whole meet its enormous potential.”

Perth, Western Australia (PRWEB) May 22, 2013 - Moodle, [...]

Perth, Western Australia (PRWEB) May 22, 2013 - Moodle, the open source learning platform used by millions around the world, has released Moodle 2.5, adding hundreds of improvements and exciting new features for teachers, students and administrators.

Inspire with Badges: Educators can award badges based on a variety of chosen criteria with the new Badges feature in Moodle, making it easy to acknowledge student’s skills and hard work. Moodle’s Badges are fully compatible with the Mozilla Open Badges standard, so they can be exported to external repositories or included in portfolios and CVs.

Use it on mobile: Moodle themes can now utilise the popular Bootstrap framework from Twitter. This means the appearance of Moodle can be attractive, flexible and responsive, allowing the site to perform equally well on desktops and mobile touch screens without additional work. In addition Moodle 2.5 supports the latest Moodle Mobile app for iOS and Android, which provides additional features for offline access to Moodle content and easy uploading of photos and videos from mobile devices.

Easier to maintain: It’s now possible to install and upgrade add-ons directly from the web interface, either directly from the official Moodle Plugins repository on moodle.org or by uploading them as a zip file into the administration page. This makes it simpler to install and maintain new community-created features in Moodle.

Improved usability: Moodle 2.5 has a host of smaller improvements for usability. Forms now look a lot simpler, with advanced settings being collapsed by default. Drag and drop images and text straight into a course page from the desktop or another browser window. Display course folders directly on the course page. Jump quickly between course sections, and more. This continues Moodle’s focus on usability improvements in every release.

About Moodle:

Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for their students. To work, it needs to be installed on a web server somewhere, either on one of your own computers or one at a web hosting company.

CAMPBELL, Calif., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – May 18 th marked the 5th annual “Scratch Day,” organized by The Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab to spread the word about Scratch, their beginner programming language and online community. This month also saw the release of Scratch 2.0, the updated edition of the web-based learning tool. Just in time for the festivities, iD Tech Camps, the national leader in summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education is preparing to launch their 15th summer season, and has incorporated Scratch 2.0 into two courses. Powered by internalDrive, iD Tech Camps is a longtime advocate of enabling students of all ages to code.

iD Tech Camps programs are held at over 60 prestigious university campuses nationwide, including MIT, where Scratch was created. The summer tech camp leader provides courses in programming, app development, game design, robotics, 3D animation, film, and more. An increasing demand for programming courses led to the addition of their new Intro to Programming with Scratch & Java course for ages 10-12, which will expand students’ understanding of Scratch, and help them transition into more involved Java programming. The existing course, Adventures in Programming with Scratch, focuses on Scratch fundamentals for ages 7-10. No prior programming knowledge is required for either course.

Scratch 2.0 makes it even easier for students to create and share programming projects. Complexities of coding are broken into bite-sized, color-coded bits, allowing kids to freely create interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. A fun drag-and-drop interface encourages students to rearrange and experiment with code in a way that quickly makes sense to them. The success of Scratch is due to its ability to present vital 21st-century skills like critical thinking, logic, problem-solving, and creative development in a way that is inviting, colorful, and engaging—as opposed to daunting and heavy. Students can share their projects with other Scratch users online, fostering collaboration skills.

“Learning to code is important for anyone who wants to be a full and active participant in society,” saysMitchel Resnick, Director of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. “Instead of simply teaching kids to use existing technologies, we must give them the tools to design and create their own.”

With its ample opportunities for storytelling and creativity, Scratch is also an effective starting point for girls to discover their affinity for coding. The Scratch courses at iD Tech Camps continue to be among the most popular with girls, engaging more female students in STEM each year.

“Scratch has been a key part of our curriculum over the years because it promotes creative and logical thinking in a fun way that’s relatable to kids—both boys and girls,” says Pete Ingram-Cauchi, President and CEO of iD Tech Camps. “We’re looking forward to sharing the new Scratch 2.0 with our students this summer, and showing them how their interests in programming can turn into future college majors or careers.” In addition to Scratch, iD Tech Camps offers a variety of programming courses in Java and C++. Teens can build their programming skills through app development, robotics engineering, and more at the intensive, pre-college iD Programming Academy.

Worldwide, students and technology educators such as iD Tech Camps are using Scratch, as it allows computer novices to understand complex programming concepts. In a world where STEM occupations are expected to grow 17% over the next decade, any tool that sparks young people’s interest in programming is crucial. Scratch empowers aspiring programmers to develop and share their creative visions.

ABOUT iD TECH CAMPS AND iD TEEN ACADEMIES
iD Tech Camps and iD Teen Academies engage students ages 7-18 in STEM education with summer programs for kids and teens held at over 60 prestigious universities nationwide, including MIT, Stanford,Princeton, and others. Sessions are weeklong, day and overnight. Teens can build online portfolios and explore future career paths at iD Gaming Academy, iD Programming Academy, and iD Visual Arts Academy.

WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwired – May 21, 2013) – School reform and improvement efforts require an information technology infrastructure in service of learning and student success. Yet, digital learning tools and services can frustrate educators. Consider that:

Teachers may have to remember multiple logins and passwords to access classroom resources or compile data on student activities, since each tool employs its own authentication process;

Online and digital learning resources abound, but it can be difficult for teachers and students to sort through them to find the ones that are high-quality and standards-aligned; and,

Educators lack a simple way to display potentially useful data in real-time, in insightful ways, when it is most relevant.

To raise awareness about many of the major K-12 data standards and interoperability initiatives underway to address these and related issues, the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) today released a new report titled, Transforming Data to Information in Service of Learning. SETDA developed this new report to help education leaders understand how technical interoperability initiatives relate to teaching and learning and to offer recommendations for how states, districts, and schools can become more responsive to educator needs and personalize learning for students.

The initiatives profiled in this report focus on ensuring consistent data definitions across schools, enabling the sharing of information across school data systems, and facilitating the search and discovery of education resources on the internet. “The widespread implementation of new and emerging interoperability initiatives will be instrumental to realizing the full potential of technology in education,” said Douglas Levin, SETDA executive director. “Our intent is that this report serve as an opening to a deeper and sustained conversation about how to make this happen.”

“Data holds tremendous power to unlock tools and resources for teachers and students to better personalize teaching and learning,” said Illinois State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch. “In Illinois, we are pursuing initiatives that make technology more accessible and effective for our schools, and I applaud SETDA for their efforts to examine how we can bring the digital experience more safely and effectively into the classroom.”

In a context where there is growing interest in leveraging new digital learning tools, online services, educational “apps,” and other technologies in and out of the classroom for learning, the SETDA report offers three recommendations:

Develop a consensus-based, long-term vision and roadmap for interoperability to ensure investments in technology and digital learning are cost effective and meet educator and student needs.

Establish an ongoing mechanism to certify best practices and address transparency related to the privacy and security of student data.

Address data standards and interoperability issues with vendors as part of state and district procurement processes for educational technology and digital learning solutions, including for the adoption of free solutions.

“Getting the right information to educators and families at the right time is vital to the learning experience of every student,” said New York Education Commissioner John B. King. “New York is committed to bringing education technology resources to our schools and classrooms to help our students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. SETDA’s report illustrates the need for states and districts to work together to make sure educators and parents understand and participate in measures to safeguard student data.”

While there are many organizations working on these issues now, the report asserts that new leadership will be required from the federal government, state governments, school districts, nonprofits, and the technology industry to make needed advances.

The report, “Transforming Data to Information in Service of Learning,” may be downloaded on the SETDA website at: www.setda.org/web/guest/datatoinformation.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced [...]

Arizona is among the 25 states that have received continuation awards for the third year of implementing a SIG model.

In addition to Arizona, other states already announced are:

Alaska—$1.5 million;

Arkansas—$5.3 million;

Connecticut—$3.6 million;

Kentucky—$7.7 million;

Maryland—$6.8 million;

Minnesota—$5.5 million;

Mississippi—$6.1 million;

Montana—$1.5 million;

New Mexico—$4.1 million;

North Dakota—$1.2 million;

Ohio—$20.2 million;

Oklahoma—$5.5 million;

Oregon—$5.4 million;

South Carolina—$7.4 million;

South Dakota—$1.5 million;

Texas—$49.7 million;

Utah—$3.4 million;

Washington—$7.8 million;

West Virginia—$3.3 million;

and Wyoming—$1.1 million.

In addition to continuation awards, the Department awarded SIG grants to 10 states to run new competitions for previously unfunded schools.

“When schools fail, our children and our neighborhoods suffer,” Duncan said. “Turning around our lowest-performing schools is hard work but it’s our responsibility. We owe it to our children, their families and the broader community. These School Improvement Grants are helping some of the lowest-achieving schools provide a better education for students who need it the most.”

Grants are awarded to State Educational Agencies (SEAs) that then make competitive subgrants to local educational agencies (LEAs) that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use them to provide adequate resources, in order to substantially raise student achievement in their lowest-performing schools. Under the Obama Administration, the SIG program has invested up to $2 million per school at more than 1,300 of the country’s lowest-performing schools. Early findings show positive momentum and progress in many SIG schools. Findings also show that many schools receiving SIG grants are improving, and some of the greatest gains have been in small towns and rural communities.

Greenville, WI (PRWEB) May 17, 2013 - School Specialty’s science division, Delta Education, announced today its Full Option Science System® (FOSS) is a finalist for the 2013 Association of Education Publishers (AEP) Distinguished Achievement Awards.

FOSS is the leading inquiry-based science program in America. Developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and published by Delta Education, this research-based curriculum for elementary school students is the first program to reflect the national vision described in A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (National Research Council, 2012). An all-new elementary program, FOSS Third Edition is based on the belief that students learn science by doing science. Research supports that the best way for students to understand the scientific process, learn important scientific and engineering concepts and develop creative thinking skills is to participate actively in scientific practices through their own investigations and analyses.

The AEP Awards honor excellence and innovation in the educational resource community and spotlight the best resources for teachers, parents and students. Each submission undergoes a rigorous three-round review by a panel consisting of educators and education professionals. Only products with high scores and comments from each round of judging are recognized as finalists and winners, with just 25 percent of overall entrants advancing to the finals. The largest of the AEP Awards, the Distinguished Achievement Awards honor the widest range of educational content available for use in educating learners of all ages.

“We are extremely honored to have FOSS Third Edition recognized by such a prestigious organization as the AEP. This new edition of FOSS debuted just last year and we continue to be pleased by the enthusiasm it has garnered from educators,” said Mike Lavelle, president & CEO of School Specialty. “This new edition of FOSS is a truly blended program with hands-on activities, reading and writing and meaningful digital resources. It puts young learners on the track to building the critical thinking skills necessary for career and college readiness and beyond.”

Winners will be announced on June 4 at the AEP Awards Gala in Washington, D.C.

“Congratulations to all of the teams who participated in this year’s competition. We are very excited for the regional winners for their outstanding work to solve problems in real life situations,” said Dale Ormond, Director, U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command. “We also want to thank the team advisors and volunteers who gave their time and shared their expertise to make eCYBERMISSION a success. We look forward to bringing more awards to every state and continue to serve as an online resource for educators who are looking for new and engaging ways to teach STEM in their classrooms.”

“These students are tackling important issues in their community and creating practical solutions that can help affect real change,” said Dr. David Evans, Executive Director of the NSTA. “We are extremely impressed with the quality of work and innovative ideas these regional winners are exhibiting and wish them the best of luck in the next round of judging.”

Through the program, teams of three to four students are asked to identify an issue in their community related to one of seven mission challenges, including:

alternative sources of energy;

the environment;

food;

health and fitness;

force and motion;

national security and safety;

robotics; and

technology.

After selecting a mission challenge, teams—under the guidance of a team advisor—apply the scientific method/inquiry or engineering design process to propose a solution. Each team then submits a mission folder, the official write-up of their project, via the eCYBERMISSION website.

The regional winning teams were chosen from a select group of 64 finalists and whittled down by a rigorous judging process. A panel of virtual judges consisting of U.S. Army scientists and engineers from the Research Development and Engineering Command and other Army organizations, STEM, scientists, and engineers selected this year’s regional winners on the basis of several criteria, including a virtual presentation of their project and a question and answer session with judges.

As a regional winner, each team member will receive a $2,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond and an all-expenses paid trip to NJ&EE to compete for the first-place national award. This year’s event, which combines educational and team-building activities, features a STEM Tech Expo, where students will participate in exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities and go on field trips to the National Mall and museums. The event will conclude with a special awards ceremony with U.S. Army leadership, where the national winning team from each grade will be announced.

Since the program’s inception in 2002, eCYBERMISSION has awarded state, regional and national competition winners with over $8 million in U.S. Savings Bonds and more than 100,000 students participated worldwide.
