MIT OpenCourseWare, Codecademy, OpenStudy & P2PU partnering in first “mechanical MOOC”

P2PU is leading a group of online learning ventures in a collaborating to develop and operate the world’s first “mechanical MOOC,” set to launch this fall. The course, “A Gentle Intro to Python,” will teach the computer programming language by assembling existing resources from online open learning sites.

This experiment in online learning will take content from M.I.T.’s OpenCourseWare and join it with quizzes and other instant feedback exercises from Codeacademy for general coursework. Study groups will be organized by OpenStudy, and facilitated through Peer to Peer University.

“The MOOCs that have come out in the last six months are really incredible and have truly moved the needle for online learning, but they are based on very sophisticated central platforms and require significant resources to develop,” Philipp Schmidt, Peer 2 Peer University’s co-founder, said in a statement.

“The mechanical MOOC is an attempt to leverage the power of the open Web, by loosely joining together a set of independent building blocks,” he said.
